By Ruben Morales Iglesias: The Belize team started with a mighty victory against Panama at the Central American U-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The Belize national team won in straight sets 25-14, 25-11, 25-12 in the opening match of the regional tournament organized by the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (Afecavol).

“We have mostly the same players we had in the Under-21s (where we were sub-champions); it’s a top class competition and we lost one of our top scorers, but we’ll try to make it a successful competition,” Cuban coach José Fontes said after the convincing win.

“Afecavol competitions will be very balanced, even the level of countries that were weaker before has increased and that helps us put on a good show.”

Belize’s next match is Friday at 5:00 p.m. against Costa Rica.

The Belize team rests on Saturday.

The Belize team plays its third match on Sunday against Guatemala at 5:00 p.m.

The team’s fourth game will be against Honduras at home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Belize team will play against El Salvador at 5:00 p.m. before the final match against Nicaragua on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
