Central America Entry Requirements Guide

Travelers are getting adventurous this year as more countries ease international entry restrictions. Read on to see a list of entry protocols for all countries located in Central America.

Belize

Belize is open via land borders and air travel. Travelers entering Belize must meet one of three entry requirements: they must provide proof of full vaccination or provide a recent negative PCR test taken within 96 hours of entry or a negative antigen test taken in the 48 hours. Children over the age of twelve must also test negative before arrival.

Additionally, all travelers must present proof of mandatory health insurance with a minimum of $50,000 in medical coverage and $2,000 for accommodation. A 21-day insurance plan is available for $18 with Belize Travel Insurance.

Guatemala

Guatemala is currently open via land borders and airports. Travelers must provide a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of arrival or proof of full vaccination. Children ten years and older must test negative.

Testing is also available at airports and clinics to meet pre-departure testing requirements for reentry to the United States.

Honduras

Honduras is open to travel provided that travelers entering through land borders or by air provide a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of departure or provide proof of full vaccination. Children two years and older must also present a negative pre-departure test.

El Salvador

Travelers can enter El Salvador from its land borders and by air. There are currently no entry requirements for entry, but testing locations are available for travelers if they become ill or to meet the pre-departure testing requirement for re-entry to the United States.

Nicaragua

Travelers must present a negative pre-departure PCR test performed within 72 hours of arrival to enter Nicaragua by air or land. There are no other entry requirements or quarantine regimes, although travelers seeking to meet re-entry requirements for the United States can only test in Managua.

Costa Rica

Travelers wishing to enter Costa Rica can do so by air or through land borders. Entry restrictions are lifted on April 1, 2022. Travelers are still strongly recommended to have health insurance with a minimum of $50,000 for health coverage and $2,000 for accommodation, but this is no longer mandatory.

Testing locations are available for travelers returning to the United States.

Panama

Panama is available for travelers crossing land borders and air travel, provided they present proof of full vaccination or present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of arrival. Additionally, travelers are required to complete the Electronic Health Affidavit before entering Panama.

Tests are available for travelers returning to the United States at airports and clinics across the country.
