Curaçao and Nicaragua enter the fray as the knockout round begins

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The knockout stage of the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship in Honduras begins on Saturday with four teams chasing a place in the quarter-finals.

Nicaragua v USA

The Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa will see defending champions USA take on Nicaragua, one of four teams emerging from last November’s WUC20 qualifying campaign.

The Pinoleros finished atop CMU20Q Group D with a perfect record of 3V-0D-0L thanks in part to goalscoring contributions from Keylon Batiz, Jareck Caceres and Widman Talaverawho scored three goals each.

Meanwhile, USA finished their WUC20 group stage with a perfect record of 3V-0D-0L and were punctuated by the likes of QuinnSullivanwho registered three goals and an assist, and the two goals and the assist of Paxten Aaronson.

This is the first meeting between the two nations in the CMU20 era.

Cuba versus Panama

In addition, at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa, it will be a duel between Cuba and Panama.

The Cubans had a very good campaign in Group E, securing six out of nine points and were trailing by Kevin Martin, who scored the winning goal in every victory. Martin will now look to do the same against a Panamanian side who finished third in Group G with four points.

Javier Betegon and Leonard Tejada with two goals apiece will be ones to watch for the Canaleros.

Honduras v Curacao

Host country Honduras start their knockout round at the Estadio Yankel Rosenthal in San Pedro Sula against a very tough side from Curacao who will try to repeat their senior national team’s feat in the 2022 Concacaf Nations League -23 and beat Honduras on Honduran soil.

Prior to the WUC20 era in 2009, the two nations had faced each other five times, with Honduras winning four times and Curacao once, so a chance to earn bragging rights is on the line again.

Marco Tulio Aceituno and jefryn macias were stellar for Honduras with three goals apiece, while Curacao netted 23 en route to a 4W-0D-0L finish in WUC20Q, thanks in part to the six goals scored by Juruel Bernadina.

Trinidad and Tobago vs Costa Rica

The other game of the day in San Pedro Sula will see Costa Rica take on Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ticos secured a solid second place in Group H, helped in part by two goals from Dorian Rodriguez to help them finish with four points.

But Costa Rica will have to beware of a big goal threat from the Soca Warriors in the form of Nathaniel Jameswho is the tournament’s co-top scorer with four goals, helping Trinidad and Tobago finish third in Group F.
